But they are indications that now is a good time to find out about hospice care and that you should ask your doctor about it. To qualify for hospice, patients must have a life-limiting illness such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, end-stage Alzheimer’s or any other condition with a life expectancy of six months or less.
Each client or family must choose hospice care with the understanding that the client is not being treated for a cure, and the client’s physician must agree that hospice care is appropriate. However, clients who receive hospice services may discontinue them at any time to resume curative treatments and can be later readmitted to hospice if they choose.
Getting into a hospice program early can comfort both the client and the entire family. Hospice clients do not have to be bedbound or homebound. Even active clients can benefit from counseling, enhanced drug coverage and other services offered.
